Abstract:The effect of TiO2 content on crystalline structure and constituent phases

friction-wear performance and wear mechanisms of air plasma sprayed Al2O3 based coatings was studied. Three variations of 0
13% and 40% for TiO2 content in weight ratio percentage were selected
namely
pure Al2O3
Al2O3-13%(wt)TiO2 and Al2O3-40%(wt)TiO2 ceramic coatings. XRD was used to analyze crystalline structure and constituent phases of coatings and Vickers micro-hardness tester to measure micro-hardness of coatings. An SRV wear tester was employed to evaluate friction-wear performance of the coatings under dry condition using two types of wear counterparts with extremely discrepant material nature
i.e. AISI52100 steel ball and Al2O3 ceramic ball. Wear mechanisms were examined with SEM. The results showed that the hardness of coatings decreased with the increase of TiO2 content. The Al2O3 based ceramic coatings showed the same trend irrespective of material nature of wear parts
indicating that the wear resistance decreased with increasing TiO2 content. No strengthening in wear performance was obtained with Al2O3 based coatings with TiO2.
